Take the Plunge: World Swim a Lap Day at Splash
21st June 2025
Tuesday, the 24th of June, marks World Swim a Lap Day, and what better way to celebrate it than taking a plunge at Splash! Splash is nestled in a reclaimed basalt quarry, which is now a 12-acre freshwater lake, with a designated 2-acre zone for swimming. So why don’t you swap out the old tiled pools for the blue & green natural scenery of Splash?
History of Swimming
It might come as a surprise, but swimming can be traced as far back as 9000 B.C., with ancient cave paintings depicting what looks like the classic swimming technique of breaststroke. More conventional leisure swimming started around 2800 B.C., with the first conventional swimming pools originating in present-day Pakistan. Swimming didn’t become a popular leisure activity until the 1800s, with the emergence of various sports clubs. Perhaps the biggest swimming milestone in the modern era was the inclusion of swimming at the 1896 Olympic Games, and swimming really took off since then.
Health Benefits of Swimming
Swimming has numerous documented health benefits, both physical and mental. It is recommended that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity per week. Therefore, swimming a few laps a day is a perfect way to hit your target.
- Cardiovascular Health – Swimming is one of the best forms of cardio, strengthening the heart while also lowering blood pressure and cholesterol.
- Muscle Strength & Tone – Swimming provides a full-body workout due to the water resistance, building and toning muscles throughout.
- Improved Flexibility – Swimming movements improve the range of movements and flexibility in the joints.
- Low Impact – The buoyancy of water reduces the stress on weight-bearing joints, making swimming an ideal exercise for people with joint issues.
- Weight Management – Like all exercises, swimming burns calories and helps in weight management and weight loss.
- Improved Lung Capacity – Swimming requires controlled breathing, which in turn strengthens the lungs and improves respiratory function.
- Reduced Risk of Chronic Diseases – The improved cardiovascular health and weight management can directly reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases like heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.
- Better Sleep – Regular exercise, such as swimming, is linked to improved sleep quality.
- Cognitive Function – Studies suggest that swimming can enhance cognitive function and memory.
- Stress Relief & Mood Boost – The rhythmic nature of swimming and the calming effect of water can reduce stress and anxiety, especially in nature.
Cold-water swimming, such as at Splash, can also have extra added benefits.
- It can help with aches and pains
- It can improve circulation
- It may help boost the immune system
- It gives a natural high, leaving the body feeling euphoric and exhilarated
- A great way to reconnect with nature
